The first and last half hours were in the sun the rest was torrential rain and gale force winds. Very hilly, 9000ft of accent. On the tops visability was poor. Struggled the last 3 miles, ran out of water and energy. Hoped for sub 50 but after a couple of miles knew it wasn't on. Nice course along tracks and over fields with a bit of road at the start. I was told at the start it was a long 26 miles, everyones Garmins showed over 28 miles at the end, mine 28.3. We ran along track, trail, fields, road mud and over rocks. Through rain and sun and Charlie's favorite, a field which had just had cow s**t spread over it. There was also a few hill which accounted for over 7600ft of assent and 7 checkpoints to find. It was the first time I've had to use my map reading skills which I discovered need some work on. At the start they said a sub 5 hours would get you in the top 10. Only the first 5 managed that and I came in 8th in 5:15:47. First attempt at a Fell race. Think it was too much too soon after White Peak. 10.5 miles with 3000ft accent. It was hot and very windy. The path at the top was very rocky and coming down I managed to turn my ankle which slowed me down a bit. Jude and the girls met me at the top! Was a lovely bright day though. The run was very muddy with some good hills. The views were great around the lakes and dams. Saw some Buzzards and Kites and plenty of sheep to make me feel at home. Great atmosphere and the start was incredible. Really struggled and felt sick at the end of first lap. The hill was a killer and we had to run up it 3 times, it was also very muddy. It was a cold start to the day about -5c. By the start at 11:00 it had warmed up and was bright and sunny. Fast course, was 1 min slower than Alsager at 5 miles and went through 10k in a PB. Struggled last couple of miles with a pain in my left knee and lower back but still came home nearly 6 mins under my PB with a 1:34:17. align="center"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;First time at the Northerns and the experiance of starting from pens and the mad rush at the gun. Had a bad stomach for 48hrs before so found the 3 laps round the fairly hilly course hard work. It was not as muddy as expected after all the rain earlier in the week. Disappointed with my time initially as I had nothing left to push on with on the last lap. Hill 60 was fun!
